Clump forming virtually evergreen perennial. Easily grown in the border or container. Spikes of flowers rather like a gladioli of dark pink flowers with a darker pink stripe. Grass-like foliage. Approx. 45-60cm tall. Any reasonable soil in full sun.
Schizostylis coccinea is valued in gardens for its late flowering - August to November. In sheltered gardens the flowering season can be much extended. Schizostylis coccinea is a most useful cut flower which lasts well in a vase.
The plants resemble small clumps of fragile gladioli, with linear leaves and upright flower-spikes, each topped by several flowers like wide open crocus. Grow it in small clumps at the edge of the pond to make a really impressive display.
