A striking clump forming evergreen plant that looks like a grass. Grown for its foliage which is almost black. Purplish-white flowers in summer followed by blue-black berries. Approx. 20cm tall. Any reasonably drained soil in full sun or part-shade. Ideal for front of border, rock area or container.

Black Mondo grass Ophiopogon planiscapus 'Nigrescens') when still a new cultivar was occasionally sold as 'Arabicus,' 'Ebony Knight,' or by the silly names 'Black Monkey Grass' or 'Black Dragon,' but the name that eventually stuck was the elegantly simple Black Mondo Grass.

Diminutive in stature with broad strap like leaves and gorgeous mauve star shaped flowers. H 15 cm.-W 30 cm. Full sun to deep shade, unfussy about soil types but dislike lime. Easy to grow evergreen and neat very drought tolerant. Recommended.
